Watch Flyers’ Mascot Gritty Interrupt a Marriage Proposal as Only He Can
Marriage proposals during sporting events are a risky endeavor to begin with, as not everyone wants to have the big question popped while blasted onto a Jumbotron in front of thousands of strangers. But proposing at a Philadelphia Flyers game involves an added layer of liability, as the team’s mascot Gritty might just come along and steal your girl. (Or, in some instances, your mom.)
Such was the case for one fan who decided to take his relationship to the next level this week at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia. In a short video posted to social media by the googly-eyed orange monster himself, the fan—clad in a Flyers jersey, naturally—can be seen getting down on one knee as his stunned girlfriend clasped her hands to her face and the crowd roared in approval.
“Danielle, will you marry me?” read a graphic on the Jumbotron.
But then suddenly, Gritty appeared seemingly out of the ether and grabbed the fan by the shoulder, tossing him to the ground. He then procured a sign that proclaimed in all-caps “MINE’S BIGGER,” though whether he was referring to the diamond or something else is unclear. Now apparently spoiled for choice, the man’s would-be betrothed held her hands up in a shrugging gesture before Gritty picked her up and carried her away.

It’s unclear whether the act was a staged bit or if Gritty really did interrupt a real-life marriage proposal, but in either case, we wish the happy couple all the best. Truly, it will be a heck of a story to tell their furry orange grandchildren.
