In 2022, Bruce Willis‘ family went public with the actor’s diagnosis with aphasia, effectively ending his decades-long acting career. Last year, they revealed he’d been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, and his cognitive decline has been a rollercoaster for his loved ones closest to him.

Willis’ ex-wife Demi Moore has been by his side amid his diagnosis. The actress opened up about life nowadays in a Jan. 30 interview with Andy Cohen on his Radio Andy SiriusXM show. When asked about what she would tell people who have family members living with dementia, her advice was simple. “I think the most important thing I could share is just to meet them where they’re at,” she said. “When you let go of who they’ve been or who you think they [should be], or who even you would like them to be, you can then really stay in the present and take in the joy and the love that is present and there for all that they are, not all that they’re not.”

Willis’ current wife Emma Hemming Willis is similarly learning to live with her husband’s ever-changing condition. “My grief can be paralyzing but I’m learning how to live alongside it,” the model wrote on Instagram in 2022 after Willis’ aphasia diagnosis. “As my stepdaughter [Scout LaRue Willis] told me, grief is the deepest and purest form of love.”

The actor’s children and extended family have come together in recent years to surround the man they all love with as much support as possible. In announcing this life change back in 2022, they declared in a joint statement that they were all in it together and willing to weather the storm for the patriarch of their group. “We are moving through this as a strong family unit,” they said. “As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

At 68 years old with disappearing language and processing skills, Willis’ only focus should be remaining as happy as possible.
