These Are the Best Cities in the World to Visit in 2024

With airfare poised to drop this year, more travelers will be itching to go somewhere exciting. When it comes to finding the best big city to go to, there are a few that you might want to check out.

Time Out surveyed “thousands of city-dwellers” about different aspects of their lives in their respective cities, such as culture, nightlife, and quality and affordability of food. Starting with a few simple questions—”Are they happy there? Is it a beautiful place? Is it easy to make social connections?”—the publication received “unique insight into the reality of living in the world’s greatest cities right now.”

In the end, New York City was crowned the best city in the world to visit in 2024. The Big Apple’s countless galleries and museums combined with abundant cultural and gastronomical attractions make it a top-tier destination for visitors from around the world. “Its neighborhoods hold the foundation together with their respective community-led events like the Queens Night Market in Flushing, the Lunar New Year Parade in Chinatown, and the West Indian Day Parade in Crown Heights. No matter the time of year, there’s always a good party to go to,” Time Out said. It also noted the jam-packed Broadway season this spring with Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along and Sweeney Todd and new productions like The Who’s Tommy and adaptations of The Notebook and Water for Elephants.

New York is the only U.S. city in the top 10, with other popular destinations like London, Madrid, Mexico City, Tokyo, and Rome claiming some of the higher spots. The American cities among the top 50 include Chicago at 14, Los Angeles at 17, Miami at 23, San Francisco at 37, New Orleans at 40, Philadelphia at 41, Austin at 42, and Boston at 43.
