When I want to an after-dinner indulgence, I usually reach for one of two menus: the desserts and the drinks. Do I want to recline in my seat and sip insouciantly on my digestif? Or do I want to hunch over a big bowl of ice cream, scooping it constantly into my mouth, not stopping to take a breath until it is all gone? Decisions decisions.

Well, decisions no more! Not since I tried my first Frozen Mudslide. Now I can scratch both itches, drinking a boozy treat made with something sweet.

As one story goes, the Mudslide was invented in the 1950s by a bartender named Old Judd (who, with a name like that, deserves their own biopic) on Grand Cayman Island. The magical moment came when OJ (that’s what I call them now) used Irish cream instead of regular cream when making a White Russian. Others point to Baileys, who created the Mudslide in the 1970s to push bottles of their product. Given Baileys wasn’t around in the 1950s, OJ’s story seems apocryphal, but then, their name is Old Judd, so I don’t know what to believe.

In any case, the REAL breakthrough came when someone added ice cream and chocolate syrup. THAT’S the important thing here.

What is the best Irish Cream to Use?

Baileys seems to have the market cornered, with many surmising Baileys and Irish cream are one and the same. But if you plan on making Mudslides on the regular, I urge you to try other brands. I’m not saying they’re better—you’re going to prefer what you’re going to prefer—but they do taste different due to their own mix of ingredients and are worth a moment of your time. O’Caseys, Carolan, Godiva, Saint Brendan’s… the list goes on.

Is Kahlua the Only Coffee Liqueur Around?

No, but, like Baileys and Irish cream, Kahlua is by far the most popular, to the extent questions like this one abound. Again, though, I highly suggest you give these other coffee liqueurs a go. In fact, they can be wildly dissimilar to Kahlua, which uses rum and Arabica beans as its base. Tia Maria, for instance, does use rum but uses Jamaican rum, vanilla, and sugar. Patrón XO Café, meanwhile, is made with tequila, and Mr. Black, which comes to us from Down Under, is made with wheat vodka. So, you see, which coffee liqueur you go for will greatly influence the taste of your Frozen Mudslide.

FAQs

How do I store a Frozen Mudslide?

My recommendation is, you don’t. I know it’s called a FROZEN Mudslide but actually freezing it will mess with the drink’s consistency and make it less than desirable.

Which glass and garnish should I use?

Use a hurricane or a stemmed poco grande glass. Both have wide mouths and big bowls, perfect for a drink as thick as a Frozen Mudslide. If you don’t have any, a highball will work in a pinch. I’ve also seen a pint glass used, making it easier to eat with a spoon. Aside from the chocolate shavings, sprinkles, and sauce already mentioned, you can top your Frozen Mudslide with whipped cream and/or a maraschino cherry—just like you would a sundae!

How many calories are in a Frozen Mudslide?

Frozen mudslides don’t come cheap (dietarily speaking), setting you back 665 calories. With so many rich ingredients, if you are looking to reduce that figure (the number of calories, not your body), you may want to pick and choose which ones are vital to your Frozen Mudslide and which ones you can live without.

Know a way I can keep my drink cold longer?

Chill your glass first. Then pour the frozen mudslide mix into it. That should buy you a little more time before it melts. I also like to keep my vodka in the freezer; you may want to try it, at least ahead of a round of Frozen Mudslides.

Do I need to add ice to the blender?

No, though doing so is totally up to you. If you’re OK sacrificing the drink’s natural smooth consistency then the ice will at least keep your drink colder for longer.

Frozen Mudslide Drink Variations

Mint Frozen Mudslide: Add 1/2 oz. of creme de menthe or other similarly flavored liqueur. Use a mint leaf for garnish.

Virgin Frozen Mudslide: Substitute Baileys and Kahlua with their non-alcoholic coffee-creamer counterparts and omit the vodka entirely.

Mocha Frozen Mudslide: Don’t just rely on the Kahlua for your coffee kick; add a shot of espresso or a teaspoon of instant coffee granules.

Peanut Butter Frozen Mudslide: Add a tablespoon of creamy peanut butter. Garnish with crushed peanuts.
