Sydney Sweeney Responds to Claim She Was ‘Objectified’ in Rolling Stones Video

Anyone But You actor Sydney Sweeney sounded off in an interview with Glamour about claims she was “objectified” in a Rolling Stones music video. Sweeney starred in the video for “Angry,” the first single off the Stones’ latest album, Hackney Diamonds. The four-minute clip features Sweeney in a leather, bondage-inspired outfit dancing and singing along to the song in a convertible cruising down Sunset Boulevard.
The video garnered much criticism for its perceived treatment of Sweeney, but the Reality star told Glamour she found the shoot empowering and was in control of her image the entire time.
“I felt hot,” Sweeney said of her controversial wardrobe in the video. “I picked my own outfit out of racks and racks of clothes. I felt so good in it.”
Sweeney continued: “I find empowerment through embracing the body that I have. That’s sexy and strong, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.
“I’m in a Rolling Stones video. How cool and iconic is that? I felt so good. All the moves, everything I was doing was all freestyle. I mean, who else gets to roll around on the top of a convertible driving down Sunset Boulevard with police escorts? It’s the cool things in this career that I had no idea I’d get to do.”
Sweeney spoke candidly about the difficulty she had accepting her body as a teen, and the frustration she feels at being treated differently by the media because of her physical appearance.
“Especially when it comes to red-carpet pics and they’re like, ‘Sydney Sweeney displays bust,’ or ‘Sydney Sweeney wears a scandalous dress,’” she explained, “I’m like, ‘I’m wearing the exact same dress someone else would be wearing! I just have tits.’ And if someone else is wearing it, they’d be like, ‘Oh, so sleek and so well-mannered.’ Just because I have boobs, it doesn’t change…”
Ultimately, though, the public discourse over her body, and by extension her music video appearances, have only emboldened Sweeney to be herself. “Flaunt what you got. Own it,” she advised. “Everybody’s body is beautiful. When you are confident and you’re happy within is when it really shows to other people.”
Sweeney is starring opposite Glenn Powell, and a few poorly trained spiders, in Will Gluck’s new romantic comedy Anyone But You. It hits theaters Friday.
