G-Shock’s Super-Limited 40th Anniversary Release Is its Best Yet

G-Shock has gone all-in on its 40th anniversary, but their latest watch release may have enthralled us most. Inspired by a kabuto, the helmet worn by samurai commanders, the G-Shock MR-G Shougeki-Maru (ref. MRG-B2000SG) features all the bells, whistles, and thoughtful details we’ve grown to expect from the brand, plus a whole lot more.
Let’s start with the inspiration because a variety of the helmet’s details can be found throughout the watch. First off, G-Shock hired Suzukine Yuzan, fourth-generation craftsman of an armor- and helmet-making workshop, to have a traditional helmet made to celebrate its 40th anniversary, and it includes a traditional maedate (samurai crest) on the front. The crest itself was created by a separate artisan and has a tiger carved into it. Now look at the band. The kabuto uses white string to connect the various plates of armor, which is why the watch uses a white Dura Soft rubber strap.

The bezel takes things even further. Each watch is completely unique as they all feature bezels manually engraved by metalsmith Kobayashi Masao that each have a tiger motif. The titanium case, meanwhile, features dark silver ion plating in order to remind us of the helmet’s color. Even the ruby bezel screw heads are meant to remind us of the samurai helmet, as they have long been known as the “stone of victory” and were believed to carry the energies of triumph over difficulty and victory.
Don’t worry, everything else you’ve come to expect from a G-Shock watch is also present in the MR-G Shougeki-Maru. It is solar-powered, water resistant up to 200 meters, has an LED light, and can connect to a phone via Bluetooth. The watch also adjusts to radio-wave time signals for precision timekeeping.
If you’re looking for a small watch, however, this—nor most other G-Shocks—is not the watch for you. Made out of titanium, the watch is 54.7mm in length, 49.8mm wide, and 16.9mm thick. It is priced at $6,600.
