Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson on Whether He Would Really Run for President
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of those unique celebrities whose broad appeal seems to transcend political ideology and has likewise managed to evade controversy (for the most part). Perhaps this is why Johnson recently admitted that he had been approached by multiple political parties asking him to run for president.
During a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, the 51-year-old was asked about the rumors of whether he would ever run for office. And it sounds like he was just as surprised as everyone else to hear his name being thrown around.
“It’s crazy, it’s wild, this ‘run for president’ talk, that has kind of been in the ether for the past couple of years,” Johnson admitted. “And it never stops being surreal. It was incredible, they came from [Washington DC], we sat down.”
“The poll was something like almost 50 percent of Americans would support me running for president,” the Moana star recalled, laughing at the apparent absurdity. “It was just crazy. Not too long ago, I was wrestling in flea markets for 40 bucks per match, hoping that—hey, I just want a free corn dog at the end of the night.”
He continued, noting that the talk has been real, and that he’s grateful for the love, thanking those who say they would support him as president. However, when asked if it was something he would ever consider, Johnson said that while he wouldn’t rule out an eventual presidential bid, he currently has bigger priorities in his life.
“I think down the road, for sure. “I’ve said this before, I’m a proud girl dad. I have a 22-year-old, I have a seven and I have a five,” he explained. “They’re all age ranged and my 22-year-old, I like to say that we grew up together. And at that time, I was wrestling full-time … so I was always gone. I know what it’s like to have an occupation that takes me away from being a daddy. And this time around with my 7- and my 5-year-old, I want to be a daddy, and that’s the most important thing to me.”
Johnson first opened up about being courted into politics on Trevor Noah’s What Now? podcast on Spotify earlier this month.
“That was an interesting poll that happened and I was really moved by that,” he told the former Daily Show host. “I was really blown away and I was really honored. I’ll share this little bit with you: at the end of the year in 2022, I got a visit from the parties asking me if I was going to run, and if I could run.
“It was a big deal, and it came out of the blue,” he elaborated. “It was one after the other, and they brought up that poll, and they also brought up their own deep-dive research that would prove that should I ever go down that road … It was all very surreal because that’s never been my goal. My goal has never been to be in politics. As a matter of fact, there’s a lot about politics that I hate.”
Well perhaps the current state of divided American politics just needs to smell what The Rock is cooking.
