David Fincher Tackles Question of a ‘Social Network’ Sequel

The Killer director David Fincher has helmed many unforgettable projects over the years, including the smash 2010 movie The Social Network. The film chronicled Mark Zuckerberg‘s rise to the top of the tech world with Facebook, though the social media giant has gone through a lot in the more than a decade since the movie’s release. This begs the question: will we ever see a Social Network sequel?
Fincher addressed the possibility in a recent interview with The Guardian. He admitted that he and Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin have discussed the idea, though it seems the talks didn’t go very far.
“Aaron and I have talked about it, but, um… that’s a can of worms,” Fincher told the outlet.
The Social Network racked up countless award nominations after its release in 2010. The film took home three Oscars, including one for Best Adapted Screenplay awarded to Sorkin. Fincher, meanwhile, earned a nomination for Best Director. It also earned Jesse Eisenberg his first (and to date, only) Oscar nomination.
Zuckerberg, meanwhile, has done just fine after the movie’s release. In the decade since then, Facebook became not just the most widely used social media platform in the world, but a major player in how people get things like news, furniture, and, in recent days, dates. While Facebook the social media site continues to operate successfully, its parent company, also formerly named Facebook, has since rebranded to Meta following acquisitions of major apps like Instagram and WhatsApp.
One can only imagine what a Social Network sequel would look like, and if Facebook wouldn’t sic their lawyers on another possible production.
