After Box Office Smash, More Good News for ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Fans

In less than a decade, Five Nights at Freddy’s went from small-scale video game to a chart-topping box office sensation. The film starring Josh Hutcherson beat out heavy hitters like Killers of the Flower Moon and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie to pull in $80 million in its opening weekend. The runaway success has already sparked talks of a sequel.
Part of the movie’s credits hint at possible future installments in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe. With the game itself having multiple sequels and spinoffs, there’s certainly no shortage of material to choose from. Matthew Lillard confirmed earlier this year that he signed a three-film deal for the FNAF series, and director Emma Tammi told Variety she’d be open to doing more movies if the first one does well at the box office and on streaming.
“We’re definitely excited to keep making more movies in this world, should we be lucky enough to do that,” she said. “This one was tied into the first game, and we would probably focus on tying the second one into the second game, and so on and so forth. But anything could happen. We’ll have to see.”
Mark Fischbach, known to the YouTube gaming community as Markpilier, had a pivotal role in spreading the gospel of FNAF to the masses. He was actually meant to have a cameo in the movie alongside fellow YouTube gamer Cory Williams (a.k.a. CoryxKenshin) but couldn’t make it due to scheduling conflicts. In the purported sequel, Fischbach would be welcomed with open arms.
“Mark is a part of this franchise through and through,” Tammi stated plainly. “We reached out and we all hoped to make it work. Unfortunately we were filming at the same time Markiplier was filming his film [Iron Lung], and the scheduling didn’t work out for this one. But we would love to include him moving forward.”
With the success of movies like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it seems like video games and film will become even more intertwined in the coming years.
